Interior design notebook - coasters and more

The Daily Telegraph (UK) – Interior design notebook: coasters and more

Traceable trees

At first glance these coasters look like perfectly nice wood offcuts that have been put to good use. But flip one over and a stamp informs you that the board is handcrafted from fully traceable hardwood timber.

You are invited to visit Bunbury Boards’ website to enter the coaster’s individual code, at which point Bluebell the Fairy (yes, really) tells the story of the tree from which the off-cut comes. There is even a photograph of the exact tree and an explanation of why it was felled.

The coasters shown here are from an ash in a wood in Co Carlow, Ireland, which was removed on June 28 2006 as part of a woodland improvement scheme. We are told that new trees of the same species are being planted elsewhere in the forest. £20 for four (08456-049049; johnlewis.com).
